Getting Started

Initial Testing and Analysis

A key first step in any neurotherapy (neurofeedback or MeRT) is the initial brain assessment. This usually involves performing a qEEG (brain mapping session) while the patient is at rest. The recording captures your baseline brainwave activity, and then the data are processed into a map of brain function. In practice, clinicians describe this step as follows: “MeRT protocols start with a quantitative EEG, or qEEG,” which “provides us with a map that guides each individually tailored treatment. In other words, the initial assessment identifies the frequencies and areas where brain waves are abnormal, creating a blueprint for therapy.

  • Step 1—Record baseline EEG: Electrodes are attached, and a 20–40 minute EEG is recorded while you relax, creating the raw data for analysis.

  • Step 2 – Generate brain map: The EEG data are analyzed (often with Fourier transforms) and compared to normal ranges. The brain mapping process then produces a color-coded map highlighting under- or overactive regions.

Step 3 – Interpret map: Specialists examine the qEEG brain map to spot dysfunctions. This helps determine which brainwave frequencies to target and which brain areas to stimulate or train in therapy.

What is an EEG?

Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an FDA approved, state-of-the-art recording of your brainwaves, facilitated by a trained Neuro Technician. Through the precision of EEG recording data, Wave is able to measure biomarkers known as Default Mode Network & Individual Alpha Frequency with remarkable accuracy. Thereby unlocking new potential for personalized Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation (NIBS) tools, empowering individuals to enhance their cognitive performance and mental resilience like never before.

How do you know what someone's ideal brain frequency is in just one EEG?

The signal that we focus on- Intrinsic Alpha Frequency- has been proven heritable, stable, and consistent over time. While a recording can be affected by recent substance use overall, the output reflects the individual’s chronic and consistent brain state.

What does the EEG process look like?

An EEG assessment takes approximately 20 minutes and entails sitting comfortably in a chair while the technician sets up the device on your head. Once the sensors are appropriately settled on your scalp, you will close your eyes and relax for the duration of the 10-minute recording.

Does an EEG hurt?

No, a brain scan is pain free.

Is it safe and does it have any side effects?

The EEG is a completely passive process that involves listening to how the neurons beneath your skull are communicating, this process doesn’t have any side effects.

What time is best to do an EEG?

Ideally no later than 6PM.

How long until the results from an EEG are ready?

Approximately 48 hours.

How accurate are the results?

Wave has the world’s largest database of EEG data and also collaborates with NYU’s Psychiatry Department, where we license their normative EEG database. Combined, these two datasets provide accurate assessment of your brain data.

What types of information is revealed from a brainscan?

You will be able to see how efficiently your brain processes information as well as any disruptions that may be causing you to experience issues with sleep, memory and focus.

What to Expect with MeRT Treatment

Testing and Clinical Evaluation

For the initial analysis, you will come in for a comprehensive testing appointment. We will gather your new patient paperwork and then our chief neuro technician will perform a qEEG and EKG, which will enable us to identify any dysfunction or communication problems in your brain.

While this appointment usually takes about 45 minutes, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, please plan on spending an hour with us. Then, after this appointment, should you decide to proceed with treatment, we will schedule your assessment period.

If you are not yet ready to commit to going through an assessment period of treatment or prefer to have your qEEG and consultation done to ensure you are a candidate for treatment, we also offer the option of coming in for a qEEG/EKG and consultation with our clinician to see your results before proceeding with the assessment period.
